HPD investigating homicide in south Houston

HOUSTON – One man is dead after a shooting that happened around 1 p.m. Sunday in the 5000 block of Reed Road.

Police said two large groups of young men met in the Prevost Center parking lot for a prearranged brawl.

KPRC 2 is told the fist-fighting turned into gunfire at some point and a male teenager was fatally wounded.

The victim, Dexter Filer, 19, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

There are reports an AK-47 may have been involved, but that has not been confirmed yet.

Homicide detectives are interviewing witnesses and searching for those responsible.

"We don't have any suspects in custody," Houston Police Department Sgt. Christopher Hassig said. "We are following some leads. We ask that if anybody has any information, please give us or Crime Stoppers a call. We do have some witnesses that were present, so we are working that angle. But as of right now, no suspects in custody."

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
