River Oaks apartment complex residents warned about balconies

RIVER OAKS, Texas – A River Oaks apartment complex is warning residents not to use their balconies because of a potential glitch with the rails.

Residents of the Westheimer at 2001 Westheimer Road received notices this week asking them to not use their balconies until further notice.

"We have recently been informed of potentially faulty brackets used to secure railings on apartment balconies," the notice reads.

"Five stories up you could really hurt yourself, or kill yourself," said resident Amanda Estes.

The warning also says the complex isn't sure if the faulty brackets were used at the Westheimer, but management wanted to play it safe.

"It's a good thing they put out the notice instead of waiting for something to happen," Estes said.

"I'm glad they informed us as soon as possible," said resident Gurkan Utku.

For now, residents aren't quite sure how long they'll have to heed the warning.

"We are in the process of scheduling inspections and will complete any necessary repairs as soon as possible. We recognize that this is an inconvenience, but, as always, our utmost concern is for the safety of our residents," said Christina Zimmerman, the regional property manager of Greystar, the company that owns the building.

Channel 2 contacted Alvin Wright of Houston's Public Works Department. He said it appears the complex has done everything right in notifying its residents. He says they will send an inspector to offer assistance if needed.
