Wharton slammed by downpours, rain

Hundreds of people left wet, muddy, without power at Wharton County Fair Grounds

WHARTON, Texas – For several hours on Friday the rain in Wharton poured down. There was also thunder, lightning and flooding.

The intersection of 102 and 60 was under water. Some drivers decided not to chance it and turn around. Others went through very slowly.

Not too far away at the Wharton County Fair Grounds, hundreds of people were wet, muddy and without power.

"If you don't have a generator, you don't have power and the generators are all under water," said Howard Albert, who was part of this year's Wharton County BBQ Cook-off.

Albert and many others were at the Fair Grounds participating in the event.

"We're die-hards," said Lisa Laitkep, who wasn't going to let a little rain and flooding keep her away. "I'll be back in a little bit."

The parking lots and surrounding land were under water. People were having a hard time getting their cars out.

"It's bad," said Laitkep. "Water is up to the knees."

"It's only going to get worse," said Albert. "That creek out there is backing up and it's getting deeper. It's pretty bad."
