HOUSTON – The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has decided to cancel Day 1 of the 2015 BP MS 150 due to recent and upcoming severe weather.
"The safety of our riders is the utmost importance to us," said Mindy LeBlanc, development manager for the MS Society.
Even with the ride cut short, cyclists said they are excited to hit the pavement on Day 2.
"Hopefully finally putting an end, finding a cure for MS. That is what we all ride for anyway," said cyclist Pat Carroll.
LeBlanc said the excessive rainfall and wind that occurred throughout this week has had a significant impact on the two sites where a majority of teams and cyclists camp overnight, Fayette County Fairgrounds and Camp St. Mark's.
"The city of La Grange Office of Emergency Management has closed the sites and deemed them unsafe and inaccessible," said LeBlanc.
We even found one rider who says he is happy Day 1 was canceled because now he can participate even though he hasn't had time to train.
"Not having to ride tomorrow lets me ride on Sunday. Anyone can do 80 miles, I certainly can. I am in heaven right now," said cyclist Andy Sherbondy.
Day 2 of the ride will proceed on Sunday from La Grange to Austin, with an 8 a.m. start time. The start line will now be at the Fayette County Courthouse at 151 N. Washington Street in La Grange.
