HCDAO: Man sentenced after driving drunk, killing 2 people in SUV

Driver accused of crashing into suburban with family of four inside appeared in court Tuesday morning.

HOUSTON – A man was sentenced to 16 years in prison after police say he hit an SUV with a family of four inside, causing a crash that killed a father and son. 

According to the Harris County District Attorney's Office, Jose Trinidad Rivera was sentenced for intoxicated assault with a vehicle.

Harris County Sheriff's Office say early in the morning on Sept. 6, 2014, Rivera ran a red light on the North Freeway feeder road and hit a GMC Suburban crossing the West Road intersection.

Two people inside the SUV, Juan Alvarez and 10-year-old Juan Alvarez Jr., died at the scene. The other two passengers, 3-year-old Ian Alvarez and his mother, Elizabeth Alvarez, were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment.

Rivera faces deportment after he serves his sentence.
