Former Galveston County judge speaks on new Durst accusations

HOUSTON – Former Galveston County Judge Susan Criss shared her thoughts Sunday about the recent accusations brought against real estate heir Robert Durst.

Criss presided over Durst's 2003 murder case in which he was accused of murdering and dismembering the body of his friend Morris Black.

Now, Durst is in the criminal spotlight again after being arrested Saturday in New Orleans.

He is accused of murdering his college friend Susan Berman. Berman may have had key information into the disappearance of Durst's wife, Kathy Durst, more than 25 years ago.

Berman was murdered execution style more than 10 years ago, but in the documentary that Durst is appearing in now, he talks about Berman's murder.

Criss said she thought Durst was guilty in the 2003 case and said she believes he is guilty in Berman's death.

"I'm very confident that the evidence is going to show that he did," Criss said.

In the HBO documentary "The Jinx" Durst is portrayed as a terrifyingly brilliant loner who has been linked to three different brutal murders over more than 30 years.

"I still believe he's diabolical," former Galveston homicide investigator Cody Cazalas said. "I think he is intelligent, but very calculating and cold."

The murder of Black in Galveston shows how dangerous Durst can be, according to Cazalas.

"He took Mr. Black's body, he took a bow saw and a paring knife and cut him into pieces," Cazalas said. "He packed him like trash and then threw him in the water and then went out to dinner."
