Mom accused of stabbing, mutilating 4-year-old son faces judge

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – A judge Monday morning found probable cause to prosecute Jenea Mungia, the  mother who's accused of stabbing her son last week.

Investigators said they found the boy Feb. 26 outside a home in the 14900 block of James River at Arcadian Shores Drive with contusions on his head, multiple stab wounds and his genitals partially mutilated.

"She repeatedly slammed the child's head against the concrete and also used a knife," prosecutor Kathy Kahle said.

The state said the child is currently on life support. Kahle said Mungia thought she had killed the little boy at the scene, claiming Mungia asked officers to shoot her and told a witness, "She had just killed her child."

Defender Eric Davis spoke to KPRC 2 News Monday after escorting the family from the courtroom. He said there are conflicting reports about the child's current state.

"I've heard from the prosecutor the child isn't progressing and I've heard it from others that the child is progressing. I think right now it's premature to say what will actually happen but I think from what I'm gathering is there's some progression from the child. My prayers are with the child and hopefully the child can recover," Davis said.

Davis asked to reserve judgment on the case, citing the mother's long mental health history.

"In this case, there are definitely mental health issues," said Davis.

He said Mungia has previously suffered from postpartum psychosis.

KPRC 2 News received a statement Monday afternoon from a man who says he is Mungia's ex-fiance. Raul Davila wrote, "Everyone needs to stop lying and making her sound like a monster. She never layed a hand like that on her son. She was a very sweet loving woman! She was never a bad fiance nor a bad mom!"

Mungia remains in Harris County Jail without bond.

Police said there was no indication of any violent tendencies in the past.

Harris County civil court records show Mungia was receiving child support from the boy's father.
