Aldine Eisenhower basketball player dies from injuries suffered at practice
HOUSTON – A basketball player at Aldine Eisenhower Ninth Grade School has died after suffering injuries on the court during a practice.
Aldine ISD officials said the 16-year-old student was running a drill Thursday at the school gym when he went up to grab a rebound, fell backward and hit his head on the floor. He was still breathing at the time, and coaches called a nurse. Nurses then had to administer CPR after he stopped breathing.
He was transported to Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His identity has not yet been released.
The boy's mother was at the school when the accident happened. She was with him in on the way to the hospital.
The district released a statement which read, in part: "Our community mourns his passing and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones. Counselors will be available to students and staff to assist them during this difficult time."
