HOUSTON – An apparent intruder is being treated at Ben Taub General Hospital after a resident shot him in the head during a home invasion early Thursday.
Police say a tenant at the Cherry Creek apartment complex shot the man after he, and possibly two others, forced their way inside an apartment on Hollister Road.
"Door was kicked in, multiple shots had been fired," said Officer Ken Nealy, Houston Police Department.
Neighbors said they heard a scuffle and then gunfire.
"[There was] rattling like someone was fighting and then gun shots took place and that's when we ran for cover," said Heather Whitfield, who lives in the apartment below the unit in which the home invasioned occurred.
While police are certain of one intruder, they say they are looking into whether two others were involved.
"Potentially we may have 2 other suspects that possibly may have fled in a dark colored Chevrolet or GMC Suburban," Officer Nealy said.
Along with exactly how many people broke into the unit, police say they have several questions. For one, the want to know if the alleged suspects knew the tenant. Also, they say they are still looking into what may have led to the intrusion. Officers held the tenant in the back of a cruiser and questioned him.
"We do have the homeowner. We have some questions we have to ask of him," Nealy said.
Meantime, other residents who live in the complex say security has been and remains a concern.
"I think we should have more security," said Faye Bradford.
"People are trying to break into homes out here. We've already been notified before," Heather Whitfield said.
Police recovered two guns from the apartment but are not saying who owns them.
