HOUSTON – Plans are still on paper but many are ready to see them take shape. More than 100 Houston residents turned out Monday night in North Houston for one of the final public meetings to discuss the master plan to redevelop Memorial Park. Monday night's focus was on what visitors would actually see once construction begins.

"(There will be ) a lot of imagery and more detailed plans to help them really imagine what it might be like if these things were to happen," said project director Sarah Newbery. "We hope they will."

There have been some voices of opposition to the long-term project, but many of the people who showed up Monday night largely were on board. There were some concerns expressed , but many centered on how to get to the park once redevelopment was implemented.

"One thing I would really like to see is better public transit to the park," said resident Frank Blake. "Right now there's really limited ways for people to get to the park except by driving their own vehicle."

"It's a little tricky getting to the park by bike," said resident Tony Banks. "If we can make more ways for people to get there safer, that's all the better."

One more public meeting is scheduled. The master plan will be presented to Mayor Annise Parker and the City Council some time in the spring. Full implementation could take 20 years but project managers said there is already money set aside that could be spent to get the first phase started about a year from now.
