3-alarm fire at storage facility in southwest Houston

HOUSTON – Investigators with the Houston Fire Department are trying to determine what sparked a three-alarm fire at a storage facility in southwest Houston Monday morning.

The fire broke out at Great Value Storage in the 5800 block of South Gessner near Harwin around 6:15 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, flames were already intense and they immediately went into defensive mode.  Because of the facility's structure, it was challenging to attack the flames.

"It started on the lower but it did go up to the second level and like I said the real problem is that we can't get through the roof," Houston Fire Department's spokesman Ruy Lozano said. "The roof is usually a way to attack it but it's a concrete roof, you're not gonna be able to break through it so we're having to take the face off the front, breakthrough and start attacking through there."

Duane Foote owns a unit and claims almost all of his possessions are inside.

"Whatever I worked myself to death for, being disabled as I am, is now gone except my car," he said.

No injuries were reported. There is no word yet on how much damage the building suffered. Arson investigators are on the scene.
