HOUSTON – Changes are coming for a well-known church in Houston's Third Ward.

The Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church broke ground on the site of its future sanctuary on Sunday.

The current sanctuary was built in 1985 and restored in 2010. It only seats 1,000 people. The church says attendance exceeds that by thousands on an average Sunday service.

The new sanctuary will span 60,000 square feet and accommodate up to 3,000 people.
