Mom's heart stops during C-Section

Some people are calling a Florida mother "the miracle mom" because her heart stopped beating for 45 minutes right after childbirth.

"I really didn't know I died, I had no clue," Ruby Graupera-Cassimiro said.

It was supposed to be a routine C-section when Graupera-Cassimiro's heart stopped beating because of a well-known, but rare complication when the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby enters the mother's bloodstream.

"They don't actually know why or how it happens," Kelsey-Seybold obstetriciangynecologist Deepali Patni said. "So, it would be like someone going into shock right in front of you because there's a lot of things it can look like. It usually happens at time of delivery or right after."

Patni said she's never seen it happen but said it can almost always be fatal. Reports said doctors worked frantically to revive the woman in Florida but she had no pulse.

"I'm assuming what they mean is she did not have a natural pulse, so that means it wasn't working on its own so they're doing resuscitative measures," Patni said. "They would have to do that to keep her alive and her brain function."

"I remember feeling a force telling me you're not coming here. This is not your time. You're not supposed to be here. You're going to wait a while but you're not staying here," Graupera-Cassimiro said.

After almost an hour with no pulse, Graupera-Cassimiro came back to life. She and her newborn are now home and doing well.
