HOUSTON – Fifteen Houston chefs are ready to serve meals in their restaurants to diabetics. The meals meet strict requirements by the American Diabetes Association.
In a statement released by Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, they said they've partnered with the ADA to take some of the guesswork out of one of the biggest challenges patients with diabetes face -- how to eat well and stay well.

It's an effort to "BEAT Diabetes" in Houston and for every meal purchased Kelsey-Seybold will donate 50 cents to ADA.
"There's 15 restaurants and some very big name restaurants in Houston. The chefs have really pitched in and done a great job at developing these dishes," Kelsey-Seybold Dr. Patrick Carter said.
Carter said as department chief for family medicine he's constantly telling patients what they cannot do and with this program they no longer have to add as many restrictions to diabetic patients.
The restaurant chefs pride their meals on being infused with flavors, loaded with protein and little to no oil, fat and carbs.
"I have spoken to the doctor and he says, 'Yeah add cumin, add curry, add cayenne pepper, just don't add to the calories.' So you can eat out if you have diabetes and still enjoy flavorful food, which is what my restaurant is all about, it's about flavor," Peli-Peli chef Paul Frieden said.
