Police uniforms may be among stolen items during dry cleaners burglary

HOUSTON – There are concerns among law enforcement agencies that an east Houston dry cleaners burglary may lead to officer uniforms being used to impersonate police.

Acme Dry Cleaning on 521 N. Cesar Chavez Boulevard is a popular spot for officers who live and work on the east side to drop off their uniforms.

"We have Houston police, sheriff and constables," manager Lilia Estrada told Local 2.

The thief pried open burglar bars on a back window and made their way in, stealing $2,000 and also clothing left behind by Acme customers. Estrada says officer uniforms may be among the stolen items.

"We don't know yet. We need to wait for the end of the day because we need to account for all of the uniforms," she said.

The store has surveillance cameras, but they weren't working. Police hope an envelope with a name listed on the outside and marijuana inside apparently left behind by the thief will lead them to a suspect.

Law enforcement tells Local 2 there is a concern if any uniforms were stolen, they might be used to impersonate officers and commit crimes.

If you have any information on the burglary, contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
