HOUSTON – Reliant Park and Reliant Stadium will soon have new names.

Reliant and it's parent company, NRG Energy, have requested to rebrand Reliant Park, Reliant Stadium and the other related facilities to NRG Park and NRG Stadium.

The request will have to be approved by the Harris County Sports & Convention Corporation (HCSCC).

Reliant expects the HCSCC to vote on the proposed name change at the March 19 board meeting.

NRG Energy acquired Reliant back in 2009.

NRG released a statement saying:

"We are hopeful that the HCSCC votes to approve the change...and we look forward to continuing our support of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the Houston Texans and all of the park's events and activities."

For Houstonians who have made lasting memories at Reliant the name change doesn't sit well.

"Even if they do change it, everyone's still going to call it Reliant," said Local 2 viewer Mary.

There has been no word on how much a re branding will cost.

A timeline for the re-branding effort was not immediately released.
