HOUSTON – Houstonians have been enjoying fine cigars at Downing Street Pub for 17 years. But a big change is now coming to the Upper Kirby establishment. The owners have decided to make it a smoke-free business.
The owners said their decision was based on several reasons. One reason they decided to go smoke-free was to broaden their appeal to non-smokers.

Another reason they decided to go smoke-free is their new neighbors. Memorial Hermann Hospital just opened a cancer center near the pub. The cancer center informed the owners they can smell smoke in their lobby and patient rooms.
The bar's managing partner told Local 2 an event is planned for March 14, the final day smoking will be allowed. It will then undergo an extensive cleaning and reopen when that process is complete.
