Student, 9, brings loaded gun in backpack to elementary school

HOUSTON – A 9-year-old brought a loaded gun to elementary school on Tuesday, according to the Houston Independent School District.

It happened at Patterson Elementary School in southeast Houston.

HISD says the loaded handgun was found in the backpack of the 9-year-old student. Fellow students saw the gun and reported it to a teacher, who confiscated the backpack and called HISD police.

No students were harmed.

After an investigation, the district says officers learned the student had brought the gun from home. Proper disciplinary action is being taken against the student.

Patterson parents were notified by phone and by letter.

"They took the situation pretty seriously and they took everything under control. And I'm not alarmed at all cause they took really good care of the kids," said Diana Marroquin.

"Luckily nothing happened. A child did the right thing. They reported it to the teacher," said Cathy Spacek.

In the letter, Principal Jeannie Castano stated, "Please know that we take these situations very seriously. The safety of our students at Patterson Elementary is always our absolute top priority."
