Egyptians in Houston take to the streets to support their military

A few dozen people stood out in front of the Egyptian Consulate on Westheimer

HOUSTON – Millions of Egyptians took to the streets to show their support for the military, which helped oust their president earlier this month.

The streets were packed in several cities, where people were responding to a call from the army chief, Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.  He encouraged them to give a mandate to stop potential terrorism by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Dozens of Egyptians living in Houston took to the streets with the same message on Friday, holding up signs and getting horn honks from people driving by.

A few dozen people stood out in front of the Egyptian Consulate on Westheimer near Chimney Rock.

"We're out here supporting what the military is doing, giving the power back to the people," said Yehia Omar, vice president of the Egyptian-American Society.

"We want law and order in Egypt," said Yrusry Salama, one of the demonstrators.  "We want the government, the police, the army to uproot the terrorism in Egypt."

A times things got violent in Egypt.  There have reportedly been clashes between the people who support the military and others who are still supporting the ousted president.  Seven people were killed and over 100 were injured.

In Houston the demonstration was peaceful and only lasted about an hour.

"We are supporting the Army's move to clean up and get rid of the violence and make sure a true Egyptian leader is in place," Omar said.
