HOUSTON – A suspect in a Harris County slaying has been arrested in Mexico.

Javier Cortez Jr., 32, has been charged with murder in connection with a slaying during a 2010 robbery. Harris County sheriff's deputies said a second person initially shot the 29-year-old victim twice and Cortez stood over him and shot him nine more times.

Mexican authorities arrested Cortez and turned him over to United States authorities at the Brownsville and Matamoros Bridge on Friday.

Cortez, who detectives said is a member of the Tango Blast gang, is being held in Willacy County while he awaits extradition to Harris County.

The $15,000 reward issued for his arrest will be paid on three tips that helped lead to his capture, Texas Department of Safety officials said.
