HOUSTON – Houston ISD Superintendent Terry Grier has approved a 2 percent raise for all HISD teachers starting next school year.

Grier said with limited funds due to state budget cuts, he thinks the larger raises for newer teachers would help recruiting.

The district plans to pay for part of the $20 million raise package by dipping into its savings account.

Starting pay for first-year teachers would rise to $45,887, up about $900.

Principals, assistant principals and deans also would get 2 percent pay bumps under Grier's proposal.

Higher-level central office staff would get raises of 1.75 percent.

Lower-paid central office staff, bus drivers and hourly food services employees would get the largest increases, 2.25 percent.

The school board is expected to vote on the plan June 21 as part of the 2012-2013 budget.
