Man charged with shooting 2, killing girlfriend

Romelle Hawkins charged with murder

HOUSTON – A man was charged with murder after shooting two people during an argument in southwest Harris County, killing his girlfriend, deputies said.

Investigators said just after 5 a.m. Sunday, they found a woman dead from a gunshot wound to the head and a man shot in the shoulder in the 8300 block of Synott.

Detectives interviewed witnesses who said the shooting happened during a verbal argument between the two victims. Officials said the woman's boyfriend, Romelle Hawkins, 32, shot in the direction of his girlfriend and the other man as they were arguing.

The woman was identified as Katherine Brownlow Stewart, 41. Her relationship to the wounded man was not released.

Hawkins fled the scene in Stewart's vehicle -- a black 2000 Ford Expedition, officials said.

Hawkins was arrested a short time later and charged with murder. His bond was set at $80,000.

An attorney was assigned to his case during an early Monday court appearance.

Hawkins has a criminal history dating back to 2002, officials said.
