Plane crashes in school parking lot

Pilot suffered minor injuries

HOUSTON – Classes at an elementary school went on as normal Friday even though a plane crashed on the grounds the night before.

Harris County Precinct 5 deputy constables said the twin-engine plane crashed in the parking lot of Warner Elementary in the 10700 block of Fry Road about 7 p.m. Thursday.

The plane took off in Vicksburg, Miss., and was headed to West Houston Airport.

Officials said the pilot experienced engine trouble and tried to make an emergency landing in a field, but he saw children there and had to find an alternate place to go down.

The plane's wing was torn off when it clipped a pole in the parking lot. The plane hit a fence between the school and a house, but the school building was not damaged.

The 37-year-old pilot was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Officials said his injuries were minor.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Cy-Fair ISD police are guarding the wreckage to make sure people do not get too close to it.
