Liberty County sheriff's deputies said the mayhem started just before 4 p.m. Tuesday when Boney's wife called 911 and said her husband shot at her with a high-powered rifle as she was trying to enter her home on C.R. 2134 off F.M. 787 outside of Cleveland.

Later, the wife said her children were on a school bus that was headed towards the house, and she told the operator she was going to try and stop the bus from getting too close. But as she ran towards the bus, she said her heavily-armed husband was also running after her, investigators said.

Officials said the bus driver eventually stopped, and Boney turned and ran back to his home.

Deputies said they and local constables set up a perimeter on the roadway around Boney's home.

After trying to negotiate a surrender, officials said Boney came out of the house with weapons.

Detectives said Boney was armed with two semi-automatic rifles and wearing a ballistic helmet, body armor and numerous extra rounds of ammunition for different weapons systems.

Investigators said they continued to talk to Boney, trying to negotiate a safe end to the situation, but Boney refused to comply with any orders.

Officials said that because they didn't know if there was anyone else behind Boney, they decided not to open fire.

Boney then took up a defensive position and began a standoff, officials said. After about an hour, officials said Boney stood up, placed his weaponry on the ground and walked to his driveway.

Investigators said that while they were placing him in handcuffs, Boney yelled that he was a warrant officer in the Texas militia and law enforcement had no authority over him. Officials said Boney became combative with deputies, so they used chemical agents to bring him under control.

Officials said they found many more weapons from Boney's home.

Investigators said Boney is a convicted felon with a lengthy criminal history.

Boney was taken to the Liberty County Jail and bond for several counts against him was set at $700,000.
