Deputy opens fire on burglary suspect

HOUSTON – Investigators are searching for a burglary suspect that a deputy fired shots at on Friday.

Harris County sheriff's deputies said the suspect tried to run over Deputy Steven Church at the Northgate Oaks apartments, 14723 T.C. Jester Blvd., about 11 a.m.

Detectives said Church was working out at the apartment complex's gym when a maintenance worker told him that he spotted a man fitting the description of a suspect from a previous burglary.

Church found the man trying to pry open the door of an apartment, detectives said. The man threatened Church with the pry bar, officials said.

The man ran to his car when Church pulled a pistol on him, detectives said.

"The suspect entered the vehicle, started the vehicle and drove toward the deputy," Deputy Thomas Gilliland said. "At that time, the deputy discharged his weapon twice toward the vehicle."

The bullets hit the car's tires, but the man kept going, officials said.

The car was found abandoned at a nearby Taco Cabana. Detectives said it had been reported stolen.

Deputies said they do not believe that the suspect was shot. A description of him has not been released.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
