HOUSTON – Several students at a Houston high school said they were punished for wearing yoga pants to school.

The students attend Memorial High School. A Spring Branch Independent School District spokesperson said the rule is clearly stated under the dress code section of the student handbook.

To protest the yoga pants rule, students created a Facebook page encouraging students to wear the pants to school on Thursday.

Some students said they were given in school suspensions for wearing the tight-fitting pants.

However, school officials said they may have given out detentions but not suspensions.

"I think this is a waste of time. I think it's stupid. I think we should be able to wear what we want as long as we don't look too provocative. If we are dressed comfortable, why is that a problem." said Hanieh Karimaghaee, a student.

The school issued a statement, saying in part, "The MHS dress code is established to prevent disruption, avoid safety hazards and prepare each student for future employability."

The dress code states that "bicycle shorts, leotards, jeggings, yoga pants, torn or ragged clothes, clothing items with provocative or drug related pictures or slogans advertising alcoholic beverages (or logos), or tobacco products are not permitted."

The school said the dress code is reviewed periodically throughout the year.

School administrators plan on meeting with student council executive officers and grade level leaders in the coming week to discuss the school dress code.
