Macy's closing Texas City store

TEXAS CITY, Texas – One of the biggest department stores in Texas City is shutting down. Some are worried about where they'll go to shop and others are worried about where they will find a job.

Macy's announced Wednesday that its store in Mall of the Mainland will soon close its doors because it is underperforming.

"It's going to be missed around here," shopper Alma Joyner said. "A lot of us use Macy's a lot, just like we did Dillard's, and a lot of these retail stores are leaving this area, which is sad."

Macy's opened its Texas City store in 1994. It and Sears were the last remaining anchor stores in the mall. Dillard's and J.C. Penney left the mall several years ago.

"It's a good store -- good products, good brands," shopper Martha Speller said. "I wish it would stay around."

"The selection for my size is usually greater, so I'm sad to see it going," shopper Mary Voisey said.

The store's 68 employees are also sad to see the store go. Some of them will be given the opportunity to transfer to other Macy's stores in the Houston area.

"I think it's a huge impact," Voisey said. "Jobs are scare anyhow. I think for the people of this community to lose their jobs, it's awful."

A liquidation sale is set to begin Sunday and is expected to last 10 weeks.
