Katy residents fight Aldi grocery store from opening

Neighbors: Not in my backyard

KATY, Texas – Residents of a Katy neighborhood are fighting a big box chain.

"Lighting and noise, it just wouldn't be a good fit at all," said Frank Aranza.

Aranza has lived in the Oak Park Trails neighborhood for 15 years. He prides himself on his beautiful backyard.  But now the peace and quiet is in jeopardy.

"Bringing in a box chain would only destroy that but also increase lighting plus delivery trucks will disrupt all of us here," said Aranza.

Aldi grocery stores have their sites on the property just beyond the fence line of Aranza's property.

Aldi is a discount grocery chain selling mostly under their own brand name.

More than a thousand members of the home owners association are fighting the plan.

"We don't oppose them coming into the Katy marketplace or the Houston marketplace or even their business model. It just won't work here," HOA President Lisa Balkani said.

Local 2 has learned Aldi has yet to close on the property.
