"We just saw (the man) on the steps on the front porch with his hands (on his head) and his head down," neighbor Donna Naras said. "You could tell he just witnessed something. You could tell it wasn't him. He was devastated."

Detectives said Stepheni Crawford, 41, shot her 7-year-old son, John "Jack" Crawford, in the living room. After that, she fatally shot herself, deputies said.

"It's a disturbing scene," Lt. Bill Bucks said.

Investigators said they have not received any other calls to 911 from the home.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.

The boy was a second-grader at Deretchin Elementary. Grief counselors were at the school to help classmates and staff deal with his death.

Neighbors and friends have left notes, flowers and cards at the home to pay their respects.

"Your heart goes out to them," neighbor Paul Rodriguez said. "You just want to cry, but there is nothing else you can do."
