SOUTH HOUSTON – A 14-month-old died after her uncle accidentally hit her while backing up his pickup truck, investigators said.
South Houston police said a woman was sweeping out their garage in the 700 block of Iowa Street about 9:30 a.m. when she went inside to ask her husband to move his truck.

The toddler, Fernanda Rodriguez, followed her uncle, Daniel Almendarez, 55, outside, investigators said. Almendarez said he did not see Fernanda, police said.
Almendarez, a Harris County sheriff's deputy, backed his truck down the driveway and accidentally hit Fernanda, officials said.
The girl was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she died.
Police said no charges will be filed in the case.
"Toddlers tend to follow the grown-up around, so you need to be aware that they are following you. And I'm thinking this is what happened with the toddler -- she followed the grown-up to the driveway," South Houston Police Chief Herbert Gilbert said. "It's very unfortunate."
