The man found his mother-in-law, who was armed with a Taser gun, at the top of the stairs, detectives said.
"Attempted to stop him," Sgt. Cullen Bean said. "He grabbed her, threw her down the stairs."
The man hit his mother-in-law in the arm with the tire iron, police said. She was not seriously hurt.
Detectives said the man then went after his wife and child.
"Looks like he went into the bedroom, threw his wife on the bed and began beating her and a younger child," Bean said. "Her mother came upstairs, grabbed a handgun and shot him once in the back."
The wife and child were not seriously hurt, but the child was taken to a hospital as a precaution, police said.
Officers said the man was apparently drunk.
The man was taken to Ben Taub Hospital and is expected to recover. His name has not been released.
Police said the man may face charges of aggravated assault and injury to a child.
