US health care spending hit $3.3 trillion in 2016

U.S. health care spending climbed to $3.3 trillion last year, according to a new government report.

The update from the Office of the Actuary, a unit of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, amounts to $10,348 for every man, woman and child in the U.S.

While that new total represents a 4.3 percent annual increase, spending actually grew slower than the 5.8 percent seen in 2015 and the 5.2 percent in 2014.

However, health care spending still outpaced economic growth in 2016 and accounted for 17.9 percent of the country's gross domestic product, up from 17.7 percent the prior year.

Hospitals represented the biggest share of health care spending in 2016, with more than 30 percent. That was followed by clinicians with 20 percent and prescription drugs at 10 percent.
