Janet Jackson visits evacuees at Houston shelters ahead of her Saturday concert

HOUSTON

Music icon Janet Jackson made her rounds at the George R. Brown Convention Center after she briefly stopped by the shelter to visit with Hurricane Harvey survivors before Saturday night’s concert at Toyota Center.

Aceton Williams, from Alief, lost everything in the flood and was moved to tears as he told us about his brief encounter with the singer. His heart was touched with joy by her love and support.

“Just the fact that someone like her let me know it's going to be OK, I believe that it's going to be OK now,” Williams said.

Jackson was accompanied by her brother Randy and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who gave her a quick tour of the shelter. Jackson is dedicating her concert to those who’ve been affected by Harvey and will donate all proceeds from the Houston show to local flood relief charities.

“It's amazing. I never thought I'd see someone like that here. I'm a flood victim but I am totally amazed by the people I've gotten to meet,” Melvin Doucett III said.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross were equally as moved by Jackson’s kindness and compassion.

“I shook her hand. She stretched her hand. I shook her hand and above all she is here to support all of us,” Elaine Oliver said.

Houston is the second stop on Jackson's 56-city "State of the World Tour."

She is dedicating her concert to hurricane and flood victims. Jackson is also donating proceeds from the show to local flood relief charities.

Jackson is just one of many celebs who have helped out victims following Harvey's devastated flooding in Texas and the Gulf Coast. Prior to the storm hitting the city, many artists decided to postpone their concerts after safety concerns arose.

Some artists, like Solange Knowles, are doing shows elsewhere, with the proceeds benefiting those affected, injured and displaced during the natural disaster. Meanwhile, Beyonce, George Clooney and Julia Roberts are among the stars who will be participating in a Hurricane Harvey telethon on Sept. 12.
