'The Disaster Artist' will be released Dec. 8

A film made famous for being bad is heading back to the silver screen.

Actor James Franco is starring and directing in the film "The Disaster Artist", which chronicles the making of the 2003 film "The Room", which has been deemed by several critics as the worst film ever made.

Franco plays "The Room’s" director Tommy Wiseau and his brother, Dave Franco, plays Greg Sestero, an actor who later wrote a memoir, called "The Disaster Artist", about his time working on the film. Seth Rogen, Paul Scheer, and Jason Mantzoukas also have roles in the film.

According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mantzoukas said James Franco used the accent of Wiseau to direct the film. “He wasn’t in character as Tommy Wiseau,” said Mantzoukas.

“But once he started the day doing Tommy’s voice, he would spend the rest of the day doing the voice. So, it wasn’t like he was pretending to be Tommy, but it was like James using Tommy’s speech pattern and accent. It was really special and very funny.”

James Franco said Wiseau’s method of directing was strange, but during the film’s production, Franco said he later identified with Wiseau. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Franco said, "The more I sat with this movie and in post [-production] and going through my own stuff, like, I am Tommy Wiseau. I relate to him so much, in ways I don’t even want to admit.”

"The Disaster Artist" debuted at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival and it received a standing ovation. It opens in limited release on Dec. 1, and will be followed by a wide release on Dec. 8.
