Every year, thousands of Texans experience their Christmas packages going missing or becoming damaged. To help prevent these issues, Harris County Precinct Four has provided five essential safety tips:

  1. Alert Reliable Neighbors: If you have trustworthy neighbors, inform them to be vigilant for porch pirates. With millions of online orders delivered daily, some individuals may wait for delivery trucks to leave before making off with your packages.
  2. Share Footage of Thieves: If you capture a package thief on camera, especially if it’s in your neighbor’s yard, share the footage with them. Doing so not only builds trust but also assists in identifying if the culprit is a familiar face.
  3. Arrange for Package Pickup: If you can’t retrieve your package immediately, seek help with pickup. Many mailing services, like USPS, offer options to place packages on hold. Alternatively, a good neighbor might assist in collecting it for you.
  4. Safeguard Neighbors' Packages: If you notice a neighbor’s package sitting outside for an extended period and have their contact information, consider texting them to see if they’d like you to keep it safe until they return. This action fosters a sense of safety and trust within the community.
  5. Use Secure Delivery Locations: Request that packages be sent to your local post office or a participating location. This ensures your Christmas gifts remain safe, eliminating the rush to collect them from your doorstep.
