HOUSTON – As KPRC2 Meteorologist Eric Braate prepared to represent the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, he received support for his training and fundraising from every day citizens, celebrities, and even a former President and First Lady.
President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush helped launch our campaign with a special letter wishing Eric well on what they called a “Herculean challenge.”
The former First Couple recently took their support to a new level with the donation of autographed memorabilia which is being auctioned with the help of Houston-based Simpson Galleries, LLC.
Mr. and Mrs. Bush’s support of this cause stems from personal tragedy. The Bushes lost their daughter Robin to leukemia when she was just three years old. They searched for a way to save her, but they couldn’t overcome the devastating disease.

It’s a moment burned in Mrs. Bush’s memory as she recalls, "I was combing her hair, and holding her hand. I saw that little body. I saw her spirit go."
Since that time, President and Mrs. Bush have been ardent supporters of blood cancer research.
The winning bids from the donated items will go directly to KPRC’s campaign for LLS. In addition, Simpson Galleries will generously also donate 100 percent of the buyer’s premium fee back to LLS as well.
That means every dime made on these auction items will help LLS advance its mission of supporting blood cancer patients, their families, and the research needed to save lives.
The first auction item is a signed photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Bush on the field for the Super Bowl LI coin toss in Houston this year. Just days after they each suffered health scares, Mr. Bush and Mrs. Bush didn’t want to miss the opportunity to be part of such a special event in their hometown.
Their surprise Super Bowl appearance was a remarkable moment that began what would prove to be a remarkable game.

In addition, the former first couple has contributed a limited edition pair of lithographs created by renowned artist Michael Reagan. The sketches include the signatures of the artist and Mr. & Mrs. Bush.
Bids can be placed online now or in person at Simpson Galleries this Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m.
