U.S. Marine veterans honored with a year of free groceries

HOUSTON – A very deserving military family received the surprise of a lifetime Wednesday.

Walmart partnered with Eckrich to present U.S. Marine veterans Jamie Davidson and Jackie Davidson with a check for one year of free groceries, worth $13,000.

The University of Houston Men's Basketball head coach Kelvin Sampson was also there to help honor the family.

Together, the couple served over a decade in the Marines. Jamie medically retired in 2012 after being shot multiple times in the chest in combat. Jamie also received a Purple Heart for his service.

The Davidsons say the gift will allow them to spend the money they would have used for groceries on their kids.

"It means a lot, we don't expect anything," said Jackie Davidson. "We believe in hard work and getting only what we earn, what we work for. Anything like this -- it helps a lot."

The gift is part of the ongoing campaign by Eckrich to honor, thank and support military families through its partnership with Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit that provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of service members and wounded warriors.
