Flood damage forces Webster apartment residents out of homes

WEBSTER, Texas – Hundreds of residents at The Green Oaks Apartment Complex in Webster are being forced to leave their homes because flood damage has made their units uninhabitable.

Residents told KPRC 2 management gave them two days to move out so crews can begin cleaning and renovating the damaged units.

According to neighbors, the heavy rainfall sent water into the first-floor apartments.

Dumpsters on the property were overflowing with furniture that was destroyed by the floods.

"Pretty much everything that was on the ground is gone," said resident Jennifer Bell. "I've missed the last three days of work. It's very stressful and it's hard trying to figure it out."

Bell said her car, which was parked outside, is totaled because it sat in water that was waist-deep.

"I worked really hard to pay off that car and just two to three more years and I would have been done. Not anymore. I have to start over," said Bell.

Bell told KPRC 2 Green Oaks is letting residents of damaged apartments out of their leases without penalties and giving them a full refund for May rent.

The Red Cross has partnered with the apartment complex to help families affected by the floods.

The organization has set up a relief center at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church at 18220 Upper Bay Road in Houston. It is offering short-term financial assistance and connecting residents with other organizations that can help them replace their belongings.

"Salvation Army, United Way, church organizations and other civic groups within the community," said Eric Oubre, of the Red Cross.
