AUSTIN, Texas – If you are new to Texas, beware of new requirements starting Monday in order to obtain a new driver license or identification card.

Starting Monday, new applicants will have to prove that they have lived in Texas for 30 days.  According to the Texas Department of Public Safety's website, applicants must now show two approved documents that show their name and address.

Acceptable documents include a health card, tax forms, voter registration card or utility bill.  With the old law, new applicants only needed an unexpired passport or certificate of naturalization.

The 30-day requirement is waived for applicants who surrender a valid, unexpired out-of-state driver license, but two documents establishing proof of residency are still required.

The new law approved by the Texas Legislature not only affects new residents to Texas, but also to current Texas residents who let their licenses or I.D. cards expire.
