HOUSTON – A new British survey shows the majority of drivers could not identify the dashboard warning lights in their car.
The survey by Britannia Rescue found that 98 percent of drivers do not fully understand the 16 most common dashboard warning lights.
The most confused symbol was the catalytic converter warning light. Most though it was an air conditioning warning.
Seventy-one percent of respondents did not recognize tire pressure warnings.
More surprising, according to the study, even ordinary status indicators were confusing to drivers.
Almost half could not identify their brake warning light.
More than a third, 35 percent, did not recognize their air-bag warning lights and 27 percent did not know what the seat belt warning light meant.
The most identified light across the board was the gas light.
According to the survey, part of the issue may be the sheer number of warnings in some cars.
For example, the Mercedes-Benz E class has more than 41 symbols, while more price-conscious cars like the Toyota Yaris has 28.
