HOUSTON – The Houston Astros are making a roster change as they attempt to climb out of an early-season slump.

On Tuesday, the team announced that first baseman José Abreu had accepted a minor league option to the Astros’ Spring Training facility on West Palm Beach, Florida. The move will take effect tomorrow.

After finishing the 2023 season on a strong note, Abreu has struggled in the early stages of the new campaign. In 71 plate appearances, he has just seven hits, three RBIs and no home runs.

“We met with José on this, and we both agree that this move will be good for him and for the team in the long run,” Astros’ General Manager Dana Brown said. “We are confident that a change of scenery and a new environment will help him get his rhythm and timing back. José is a team-first guy, and we applaud him for this. We know what this guy can do, and we’re confident in his determination and work ethic.”
