KPRC 2 Senior Scholarship: Meet Emerie McCann, the class valedictorian who wants to study environmental engineering

KPRC 2 and American Furniture Warehouse are surprising 20 deserving high school seniors with scholarships in 2024. All students selected for scholarships have been nominated by their high schools.

The first $2,500 scholarship winner of the year is Emerie McCann, who is class valedictorian at Houston Independent School District’s Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy.

McCann actively serves her community with more than 550 hours of volunteer work. Reach Out and Read is one organization where McCann volunteers, reading to children and encouraging them to read on their own. Her public speaking activities are impressive, especially given that McCann overcame a childhood diagnosis of selective mutism. “I feel like, honestly, coming to this school has really helped me come out of my shell,” said McCann.

In addition to her academic accolades and extensive volunteer hours, McCann is a class officer, member of the National Honor Society and serves as president of her school’s chapter of the Society of Women Engineers.

McCann plans to study Environmental Engineering. She has been accepted at the University of Texas at Austin.
