Earl strengthens to Category 1 hurricane

Storm still headed toward Belize

HOUSTON – Forecasters said that what was Tropical Storm Earl strengthened to a minimal hurricane Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Earl had winds of 75 mph, making the storm a Category 1 hurricane.

The storm is still moving west toward Belize in Central America, and hurricane warnings have been posted for the eastern coast of the country. Southern sections of the Yucatan Peninsula have also been placed under warnings.

The storm is expected to remain a hurricane until it makes landfall early Thursday. It will make a second landfall in southern Mexico late Friday.

While there will be no direct impacts to Houston, Earl could sling enough moisture into southeastern Texas to produce scattered showers and storms by late this weekend or early next week.
