Heaviest rain pushes east; flash flood watch canceled

HOUSTON – The heaviest rains forecast Monday has pushed east of the Houston area, but the rain will continue through lunch, according to forecasters.

The worst of Monday’s weather arrived in Houston during the peak of the morning commute, causing some street flooding and slowing many drivers. By 8 a.m., the heaviest rain had pushed east of the city.

A flash flood watch that was issued for all of southeast Texas until 4 p.m. Monday was canceled at 7:45 a.m.

Meteorologist Britta Merwin said periods of moderate rain will continue across the region through about lunchtime. Up to 2 inches of rain is possible in some locations.

High water and ground stops

No serious flooding was reported, but Houston TranStar reported high water at two locations. Both locations were later removed from the high-water list.

Rosenberg police also reported high water at Avenue H and Lane Drive and at the Highway 90 and Highway 36 split.

Drivers were reminded that it is never safe to drive through water-covered roads.

Ground stops were issued for both Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport. Both were lifted by 8:30 a.m.

Officials prepare

After storms devastated parts of San Antonio on Sunday night, officials in Houston were prepared for the worst.

The Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management activated its operations center at Level 3 – the second highest level possible.

The Houston Independent School District and the University of Houston reported that facilities were running on normal schedules Monday.

Extended forecast

A slim chance for showers is in the forecast for Tuesday, but sunnier and warmer weather is forecast for the remainder of the week.

High temperatures will climb to near 80 degrees Tuesday through Friday. Slightly cooler weather arrives for the weekend.
