Ching's Chances: Mexico-Cameroon World Cup preview

HOUSTON – Looking at the Mexico Cameroon game Friday I would have to give the advantage to Mexico.

Although they have struggled in the qualifying process, Mexico has consistently been a great tournament team. I believe these struggles have strengthened the team resolve and prepared it for any adversity the team will face in the opening round. It is important to note that over the past six World Cup appearances they have made it out of group play.

Mexico's possession style of play will be their greatest strength when facing the Indomitable Lion's. By keeping the ball they will limit Cameroon's advantage in physicality and speed. If they are unable to find their rhythm it will allow Cameroon more opportunity to use their pace against the slower defensive line of Mexico. With one of the greatest goal scorers in Eto'o constantly testing an aging Marquez it will be essential that their defensive unit stays connected and covers for one another.

An area of concern for Mexico was their lack of goal production in the warm-up games to the World Cup. However, when watching these games they created numerous scoring opportunities and were frankly unlucky or thwarted by great saves. If they were not creating these chances that would be of greater concern. It will be key for Peralta to find the back of the net for them when the tournament starts and he could have a breakout tournament as I feel he will get the most chances to score for the Mexican team.

I feel that Mexico will come to play and wins 2-1 and gets off to a great start of once again getting out of group play.
