April 22: Health care, election

HOUSTON – Health care for low-income women in Texas will be better as a result of Planned Parenthood being cut out of Texas Medicare funding.

That's just one assertion by State Sen. Dan Patrick on this week's Houston Newsmakers.  He made that prediction during a discussion with Sonceria Messiah Jiles, chief executive officer and publisher of the Defender Media group. It was a reunion of sorts for the duo, who spent years as regulars on the original Newsmakers program that ran starting in the late 1990s here on KPRC.

Other topics tackled by Patrick and Jiles include the chances for a win by Gov. Mitt Romney over President Barack Obama, whether or not Romney will carry Harris County and what is most important for all Texans as the Texas primary approaches on May 29.

In one sense, nothing has changed. When Patrick and Jiles get together, fireworks fly!

Also this week, we have a preview of the Houston March for Babies benefitting the March of Dimes. Houston's march is the largest in the United States. Joining host Khambrel Marshall is Scott McClelland, president of the Houston region of H-E-B and this year's chairman of the 2012 March for Babies, and Lindsey Martin, an H-E-B employee who delivered a son at 24 weeks gestation weighing 1 pound 12 ounces.

Premature birth is the leading cause of death among newborns. The discussion this week centers on why that is so, how the Houston event helps improve the odds for all children to be born healthy and ways you can play a role in making a difference.

And PLAY BALL!!  The Sugar Land Skeeters open their inaugural season on April 26t at the new Constellation Field in Sugar Land. It is the professional baseball alternative to the Houston Astros, and Skeeters President Matt O'Brien stops by to talk about the expectations for the new team in the new season in their new home.

Join host Khambrel Marshall for this full and interesting program Sunday at 10 a.m., right after Meet the Press with David Gregory.
