Woman shot in head during possible road rage incident on North Freeway

HOUSTON – A 28-year-old woman, who is recovering in the hospital after getting shot in the head during a road rage incident, has been identified.

The shooting happened around 7 a.m. Friday near the Airtex exit along Interstate 45 North Freeway.

Investigators said the woman was on her way to work, when she ran into some sort of issue with another driver on the road. She beeped her horn at him and then the driver started taunting her.

He eventually pulled up next to her vehicle, then fired one gunshot through her front passenger window. The bullet hit the woman in the back of the head.

The victim's husband spoke about what happened on Friday.

"She let him know, by blowing her horn, that he shouldn't have cut her off, and the guy went to let his window down, and of course, she didn't let her window down, and that's when he proceeded to shoot her," Kendrick Hafford said.

The woman, identified as Kay Hafford, managed to pull over to the side of the freeway and call 911 for help. Hafford was in and out of consciousness when emergency crews arrived and was transported to Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute in the Texas Medical Center. KPRC 2 is told she is in fair condition.

Deputies are now looking for the driver who fired the gunshot. They say he was driving a white SUV and wearing a blue baseball cap.

When asked about the shooter, Kendrick Hafford said, "May God just deal with you, that's all I can say because if I ever find out or get wind of who it is, it's not going to be nothing nice."

The Haffords released the following statement Friday evening:

"We are shocked and devastated by the events that transpired this morning. We are working with law enforcement to aid in their investigation however we can, and we hope they are able to track down whoever is responsible for this senseless act of violence. Our family asks that you please respect our privacy during this time as Kay rests and recovers from her injuries, and please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Kay remains in fair condition at Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute and for that we are very grateful; it could have been so much worse. Life is definitely too short. Enjoy your time with loved ones because you never know when the next day might be your last. Thank you to all of our friends and family for the visits, texts, emails and calls – they ease our hearts and mean so much. Thank you for your love and support. Keep us lifted."

Authorities will be checking out any roadway surveillance video that may have captured the incident. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Precinct 4 at 281-401-6205.
