Family suspects movers of stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry

CLEAR LAKE, Texas – The Houston Police Department is investigating a Pearland moving company accused of stealing $30,000 worth of jewelry from a family they did a move for in southeast Houston.

Verr Soltes and her family found the movers from the Rent A Dude moving company on Groupon.

"We realized the stuff was missing only a few minutes after they'd left," she said.

It was supposed to be a simple relocation, literally just down the street from their old home.  After the movers finished the job the night of the move earlier this month, Soltes went back to her old house and noticed her jewelry box was out of place. She says it was in her master bedroom, which had been closed off to the movers.

"When I opened it up and saw that my wedding bands, and Aggie ring, and bunch of different sentimental jewelry were all missing, that's when I knew that it wasn't just jostled," Soltes said.

KPRC 2  spoke to the lead mover, Kofi Williams, whose name is on the check for the job. Williams said he trusts his movers and claims the Soltes family is setting him up, that anyone could've stolen the jewelry that night.

In the meantime, HPD has confirmed they're investigating the movers and say several of the pieces have been located at Houston area pawn shops. Soltes is looking forward to getting those items returned. She said it will hard to replace her peace of mind.

"It's impossible to describe how you feel when you've sort of been betrayed," Soltes said.

HPD is holding the jewelry while the investigation continues. They have obtained the names of the people who sold the jewelry and are looking to see if surveillance video of the sales is available.
