HOUSTON – Water is back on for 74-80 homes and businesses after repairs were completed following a water main break that sent high-pressure water shooting into the air near Beltway 8 and Bellfort Tuesday morning.
A utility crew was installing telephone lines for AT&T. They hit a 12-inch water line, City of Houston Public Works spokesman Gary Norman said.
The mistake sent a geyser of water shooting into the air for more than an hour.
It took about two hours to repair the line. During that time some homes and business were without water. Full water service was restored before 4 p.m.
The city of Houston spokesman described the situation as complex but routine.
Neighbors said the sight of water shooting so far into the air was worth seeing.
“I think it’s remarkable,” Jeanette Evans, who has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years, said. “I like watching it.”
“We will have to go out to eat. I already took a shower and I’m fine, said Evans’ friend Flor Anderson, with a laugh.
