Want to increase your home value in Houston? Don't paint your bedroom this color

Pink brought down home value, according to study

SEATTLE – The color of a home could mean the difference of a few thousand dollars in a sale.

Zillow, a real estate website, performed its 2017 Paint Color Analysis and looked at more than 32,000 photos from sold homes around the country to see how certain paint colors impacted their sale price on average, when compared to similar homes with white walls.

According to the analysis, homes with walls painted in shades of blue or light gray may sell for as much as a $5,400 premium. Walls painted in other cool, natural tones like pale grey or oatmeal also performed well.

Some colors may deter buyers. Homes with darker, more style-specific walls, like terracotta dining rooms sold for $2,031 less than expected. The Zillow analysis found that in Houston, a pink bedroom brought the home's value down an average of $208.

However, a lack of color may have the biggest negative impact, as homes with white bathrooms sold for an average of $4,035 below similar homes.

According to Zillow, the color pink ("Light pink to antique rose; often found in kids' rooms") dropped the average Houston home value by more than $200.
